β2-MG (Beta-2 Microglobulin) - Serum
A key marker for blood cancers and immune activity.
Beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) is a small protein found on the surface of most cells and released into the bloodstream as cells are produced and broken down. The level in the blood reflects the overall rate of this cell turnover, which tends to rise when certain blood cancers or immune conditions are present. Because the protein is cleared by the kidneys, blood levels can also rise when kidney function is reduced.
Measuring B2M in the blood is mainly used as a marker of cell turnover and immune activity, and can help to:
- Support the assessment of blood cancers such as multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and leukaemia, where it also aids staging and prognosis.
- Monitor disease activity and track how well treatment is working over time.
- Indicate immune activation or inflammation linked to certain chronic conditions.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
