β2-MG (Beta-2 Microglobulin) - Urine
Check for early signs of kidney tubule damage.
Beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) is a small protein found on the surface of most cells and released into the bloodstream as cells are renewed. It is filtered by the kidneys and then almost entirely reabsorbed by the kidney tubules, so normally very little appears in the urine. When the tubules are damaged, this reabsorption fails and B2M levels in the urine rise.
Measuring B2M in urine is therefore mainly used to assess kidney tubular function, and can help to:
- Detect kidney tubular damage caused by certain medications, heavy metals such as cadmium, or underlying tubular disorders.
- Distinguish tubular from glomerular kidney problems, helping to pinpoint where in the kidney the issue lies.
- Monitor kidney health in people with known occupational or environmental exposures, or following a kidney transplant.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
