Acid Phosphatase Blood Test (ACP)
Total acid phosphatase level to help investigate bone and blood disorders.
The acid phosphatase blood test measures total acid phosphatase (ACP), an enzyme found in several parts of the body, including bone, the prostate, the liver, the spleen and red blood cells. Doctors may request it when investigating bone problems, such as unexplained bone pain or fractures, or certain blood disorders.
The enzyme comes in several forms (isoenzymes), one from each tissue. This test measures the total amount from all sources, so it cannot show on its own which tissue a raised level is coming from. If needed, your doctor may arrange further tests to find out.
Please note: this is not a prostate test. If you want to check your prostate health, the PSA blood test is the recommended test.
What the test measures
- Total acid phosphatase (ACP): the overall level of this enzyme in your blood.
Why it matters
A raised acid phosphatase level can point to increased activity in bone or other tissues. It is not a cancer test and cannot diagnose a condition on its own, but it can provide useful information when your doctor considers it alongside your symptoms, medical history and other tests. Please discuss your result with your GP, who can decide whether any further tests are needed.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
