Amoebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. While many people who carry the parasite remain asymptomatic, invasive disease can lead to amoebic dysentery, liver abscesses, and, in rare cases, spread to the lungs or brain. This antibody blood test is designed for individuals with persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or bloody stools, particularly following travel to or residence in regions where amoebiasis is common, such as parts of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. It is also useful for returning travellers, migrants from endemic areas, and anyone with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms or a suspected liver abscess.
The test works by detecting antibodies produced by the immune system in response to Entamoeba histolytica infection. Antibodies typically become detectable within one to two weeks of infection and can remain present for months or even years after the infection has cleared. This makes the test particularly valuable for confirming past or ongoing exposure, especially when stool microscopy has been negative. The analytical method used is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a highly sensitive and specific technique for detecting amoebiasis antibodies in a simple blood sample.
