ANA Blood Test (Antinuclear Antibody – Immunofluorescence)

The ANA blood test detects antinuclear antibodies, autoantibodies that target components of your own cell nuclei. It is used to screen for autoimmune conditions when patients present with persistent symptoms such as joint pain, unexplained fatigue, skin rashes, or recurring fevers. It is also requested to support the investigation of suspected connective tissue diseases including lupus (SLE), Sjögren's syndrome, scleroderma, and mixed connective tissue disease.
The test is performed using immunofluorescence, a technique that visualises antibody binding to specific cellular structures. This method provides both a titre (how much antibody is present) and a pattern (which part of the cell is targeted), giving clinicians valuable clues about the underlying condition.
