Apolipoprotein A-1 (Apo A-1) is the main protein component of HDL ("good") cholesterol. It helps remove excess cholesterol from tissues and the artery walls and transport it back to the liver for disposal — a process called reverse cholesterol transport. Because of this protective role, higher Apo A-1 levels are generally associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, while low levels can indicate increased risk. It's often measured alongside Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) to give a clearer picture of cardiovascular risk than a standard cholesterol test alone.
