Apolipoprotein B
Measure 'bad cholesterol' particles for a clearer heart risk picture.
Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) is the main protein found in "bad" cholesterol particles, including LDL, VLDL, and related lipoproteins. Each of these particles carries a single Apo B molecule, so measuring Apo B gives a direct count of the total number of cholesterol-carrying particles that can build up in artery walls. This makes it a strong and often more accurate indicator of cardiovascular risk than standard LDL cholesterol alone. Raised Apo B levels are associated with a higher risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke, and it is frequently measured alongside Apolipoprotein A-1 to assess the balance between harmful and protective cholesterol.
