CA 242 Blood Test (Pancreatic & Bowel Cancer Marker)
A complementary tumour marker for pancreatic and bowel cancer.
The CA 242 blood test measures a tumour-associated antigen that can be elevated in certain gastrointestinal cancers, particularly pancreatic and colorectal (bowel) cancer. It is used alongside other clinical findings, imaging, and tumour markers such as CA 19-9 and CEA, and is not a standalone diagnostic test. It may be requested by clinicians investigating unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, monitoring known disease, or assessing treatment response. A simple blood sample is taken by a trained phlebotomist.
Biomarkers
- Cancer antigen 242 (CA 242): a sialylated carbohydrate antigen that can be raised in pancreatic and colorectal malignancies. It is often used in combination with other markers to improve clinical sensitivity and specificity.
Why it matters
CA 242 can provide useful supporting information when pancreatic or bowel cancer is suspected or being monitored. Because it is not specific to cancer and can be elevated in some benign conditions, results must always be interpreted by a doctor alongside your symptoms, imaging, and other test results. It should not be used alone to rule cancer in or out.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
