Cardiac Profile - Comprehensive
An in-depth look at heart function and cardiovascular risk.
This comprehensive profile is our most detailed assessment of heart health. It includes everything in our Cardiac Profile - Basic and adds a broader set of specialist markers covering heart muscle function, blood clotting, and inherited and metabolic risk factors, giving an in-depth picture in a single appointment.
Heart muscle markers
These markers reflect the condition of the heart muscle and can indicate strain or damage:
- Cardiac troponin I (cTnI): a highly specific marker of heart muscle injury
- Creatine kinase (CK) and CK-MB: enzymes released when muscle, including heart muscle, is damaged, with CK-MB being more specific to the heart
- Myoglobin: an early marker released when muscle is injured
- AST, LDH, and HBDH: enzymes that can rise with heart muscle stress or damage
Cardiovascular risk markers
These help assess your longer-term risk of heart and circulatory disease:
- Cholesterol profile: a full breakdown of your cholesterol and related fats
- Lipoprotein (a): an inherited risk factor for cardiovascular disease
- Homocysteine: raised levels are linked to an increased risk of heart and circulatory problems
- Glucose: raised blood sugar is an important cardiovascular risk factor
Specialist and supporting markers
- ST2: a marker linked to strain on the heart and used in assessing heart failure
- D-dimer: a marker of blood clot activity, relevant to conditions such as clots in the veins or lungs
- Full Blood Count: gives a broad picture of your general health and conditions such as anaemia that can affect the heart
- Kidney markers (urea, creatinine, and eGFR): important because heart and kidney health are closely linked
- BMI and blood pressure: key physical measures of cardiovascular health and risk
Why it matters
Heart disease often develops quietly over many years, with few warning signs until a problem occurs. This comprehensive profile helps you understand your heart function and personal risk factors in depth, identify potential issues early, and take informed steps to protect your long-term cardiovascular health.
Everything in the Basic profile, plus:
- Full Blood Count (FBC)
- Cholesterol Profile
- Cardiac troponin I (cTnI)
- Creatine kinase (CK)
- Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)
- Glucose (GLU)
- Urea
- Creatinine (CRE)
- eGFR
- BMI and blood pressure
- Creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB)
- Myoglobin (MYO)
- Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)
- Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBDH)
- ST2 (Suppression of Tumorigenicity 2)
- D-dimer (D-D)
- Homocysteine (HCY)
- Lipoprotein (a)
No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
