The Cholylglycine Blood Test measures cholylglycine (CG), a primary bile acid that is normally cleared efficiently by a healthy liver. When liver cells are damaged or bile flow is impaired, cholylglycine accumulates in the bloodstream, making it a sensitive marker for early or subtle changes in liver function. This test is particularly useful for individuals with known or suspected liver conditions, those exposed to hepatotoxic medications or chemicals, and anyone requiring a more detailed assessment of bile acid metabolism than standard liver function tests provide.
What it screens for
- Cholylglycine (CG): A conjugated bile acid that reflects hepatic clearance and enterohepatic circulation. Elevated levels can indicate hepatocellular dysfunction, cholestasis, or impaired bile flow before conventional liver enzymes become abnormal.
Why it matters
Cholylglycine can rise earlier than routine liver enzymes such as ALT or AST, offering a window into liver health that standard panels may miss.
