CMV Antibody Blood Test (Cytomegalovirus IgG)
Know your CMV immunity status with one simple blood test.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpesvirus that infects most people at some point in their lives, often causing mild or no symptoms. Once infected, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate, particularly when the immune system is weakened. This test detects IgG antibodies against CMV, which indicate past infection or exposure and the presence of acquired immunity. It is particularly useful for pregnant women, individuals with compromised immune systems, organ transplant recipients, and healthcare workers who may be at increased risk of exposure. The test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure CMV-specific IgG antibodies in a simple blood sample.

Why it matters
Knowing your CMV IgG status helps determine whether you have been previously infected and have developed antibodies. This is especially important for pregnant women, as a primary CMV infection during pregnancy can pose risks to the unborn baby. For immunocompromised individuals, knowing CMV status helps guide monitoring and preventive strategies. A positive IgG result generally indicates past infection and immunity, while a negative result suggests no prior exposure and potential susceptibility. This information supports informed decisions about precautions and clinical management.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
