DHEA-S (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate)

DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate) is a hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands, the small glands that sit above the kidneys. It acts as a building block that the body can convert into other sex hormones, including testosterone and oestrogen. Because it is produced almost entirely by the adrenal glands and remains fairly stable throughout the day, measuring DHEA-S provides a useful picture of adrenal gland activity.

What it can help assess

• Adrenal gland function: DHEA-S levels reflect how active the adrenal glands are, and can be raised or lowered in various adrenal conditions
• Investigating signs of excess male hormones: in women, this may include symptoms such as irregular periods, excess hair growth, or acne, where a raised DHEA-S can point to an adrenal cause
• Supporting the investigation of PCOS and other hormonal conditions, alongside other tests
• Assessing early or delayed puberty in younger patients, as part of a wider hormonal assessment

An important note on interpretation

DHEA-S levels naturally change with age, typically peaking in early adulthood and declining steadily thereafter, so results are interpreted with age in mind. As with other hormones, DHEA-S is best understood alongside your symptoms and other hormone results rather than on its own. Any abnormal result should be discussed with your GP or specialist, who can interpret it in context and advise on any further testing needed.
