Female Fertility Check I
Insight into your key reproductive hormones.
This check measures four key hormones involved in the menstrual cycle and fertility, giving useful insight into how well your reproductive hormones are working. These hormones govern ovulation and the regularity of your cycle, so measuring them can help build a picture of your fertility and shed light on issues such as irregular periods or difficulty conceiving.
What this check measures
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): stimulates the ovaries to prepare an egg each cycle. Levels give insight into ovarian activity and, alongside other results, can help assess how the ovaries are functioning
- Luteinising hormone (LH): triggers the release of an egg (ovulation). The balance between LH and FSH can help identify conditions such as PCOS
- Oestradiol (E2): the main form of oestrogen, produced by the ovaries. It plays a central role in the menstrual cycle and reflects ovarian activity
- Progesterone (P4): produced after ovulation, it helps prepare the body for a possible pregnancy. Measured at the right point in the cycle, it can confirm whether ovulation has taken place
An important note on timing
These hormones change considerably across the menstrual cycle, so the timing of your test matters a great deal. FSH, LH, and oestradiol are usually measured in the early part of the cycle (often days 2 to 5), while progesterone is measured later, around 7 days before your next expected period, to check for ovulation. Please follow the timing guidance provided, as testing on the wrong day can make results difficult to interpret.
Why it matters
Understanding your reproductive hormones can provide valuable insight if you are trying to conceive, experiencing irregular or absent periods, or simply want to understand your cycle better. As results depend heavily on cycle timing and are best understood together, any findings are best discussed with your GP or a fertility specialist, who can interpret them in context and advise on next steps.
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Luteinising hormone (LH)
- Oestradiol (E2)
- Progesterone (P4)
No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
