G17 (Gastrin-17)

Gastrin-17 (G-17) is a hormone produced by specialised cells in the lower part of the stomach (the antrum). It plays an important role in regulating the production of stomach acid and in maintaining the health of the stomach lining. Measuring gastrin-17 provides insight into how this part of the stomach is functioning, and it is used mainly to help assess certain conditions affecting the stomach.
What it can help assess
- Stomach health and function: gastrin-17 reflects the activity of the acid-regulating cells in the lower stomach
- Investigating dyspepsia and stomach symptoms: it can form part of the assessment of ongoing indigestion or upper abdominal symptoms
- Assessing atrophic gastritis: an unusually low or high level can point to changes in the stomach lining, such as atrophic gastritis, a condition where the stomach lining becomes thinned and less able to produce acid
- Supporting a fuller stomach assessment: it is often measured together with other markers, such as pepsinogen and Helicobacter pylori antibodies, to build a more complete picture of stomach health
An important note on interpretation
Gastrin-17 is most informative when interpreted alongside other stomach markers and your symptoms, rather than on its own. Levels are also affected by whether you have eaten and by certain acid-reducing medications, so following the preparation guidance is important for a reliable result. Any abnormal result should be discussed with your GP or a specialist, who can interpret it in context and advise on any further investigation, such as an endoscopy, if needed.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
