Glycoprotein Polymorphism GPIa
Assess an inherited platelet-related clotting risk factor.
This test looks for a common genetic variation (polymorphism) in the gene for glycoprotein Ia (GPIa), a receptor found on the surface of platelets, the blood cells responsible for forming clots. GPIa helps platelets stick to the walls of blood vessels when a clot needs to form. Variations in this gene can affect how readily platelets respond, which may influence the tendency of the blood to clot.
What it can help assess
- Inherited clotting tendency: the GPIa polymorphism is one of several genetic factors that can influence platelet function and clotting risk
- Understanding personal or family risk: particularly relevant if you or a close relative have had a blood clot, such as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), heart attack, or stroke at a younger age
- Building a fuller genetic picture: it is usually assessed alongside other clotting-related genetic markers rather than on its own
An important note on interpretation
The GPIa polymorphism is considered a modest risk factor, and its effect on its own is generally smaller than that of the better-known clotting variants such as Factor V Leiden or the prothrombin variant. Carrying this variation does not mean a clot will occur, and not carrying it does not remove all risk, since many other genetic, lifestyle, and medical factors also play a part. Results are best interpreted alongside your personal and family history and other clotting markers, and any significant finding should be discussed with your GP or a specialist, who may recommend genetic counselling.
Why it matters
Understanding your inherited clotting factors can contribute to a fuller picture of your cardiovascular and clotting risk, particularly where there is a personal or family history of clots. As this is one of several contributing factors, it is most useful as part of a wider assessment rather than in isolation.
