Gonorrhoeae Screening Test

This test screens for infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium that causes gonorrhoea, one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the UK. It is suitable for anyone who is sexually active and wants to check their sexual health, particularly those who have had a new partner, multiple partners, unprotected sex, or who are experiencing symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain on urination, or pelvic discomfort. It is also appropriate for individuals who have been notified of potential exposure or who require routine screening as part of their sexual health checks.
The test uses nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), a highly sensitive molecular method that detects the genetic material of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from a simple sample. This technique is the gold standard for gonorrhoea screening and can identify infection even when symptoms are absent, which is common in both men and women.
What it screens for
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae: This bacterium infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra, rectum, and throat in both men and women. The test specifically detects the presence of this organism, confirming or ruling out an active gonorrhoea infection.
Why it matters
Gonorrhoea can often be asymptomatic, meaning many people carry and transmit the infection without knowing it. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and an increased risk of contracting or transmitting HIV. Early detection through screening allows for prompt treatment with antibiotics, prevents onward transmission to partners, and reduces the risk of long-term health consequences. Regular screening is a key part of maintaining sexual health and wellbeing.
