H. pylori Antibody Blood Test (Helicobacter pylori IgG)

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped bacterium that colonises the stomach lining and is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections worldwide. This antibody test is used to detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to H. pylori exposure, making it a useful screening tool for individuals with persistent indigestion, bloating, upper abdominal discomfort, or a history of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. It is also appropriate for those with a family history of gastric cancer or unexplained iron deficiency anaemia, where H. pylori is a recognised contributing factor.

The test is performed on a simple blood sample using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique, which identifies the presence of H. pylori-specific antibodies in the circulation.

What is screened

• Helicobacter pylori antibody (ANTI-HP): Detects antibodies directed against H. pylori, indicating current or past exposure to the bacterium. A positive result suggests the immune system has encountered H. pylori at some point, while a negative result makes active infection less likely in most clinical settings.

Why it matters

H. pylori is a leading cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen for gastric cancer. Identifying exposure allows you and your doctor to discuss appropriate follow-up, which may include confirmatory testing such as a stool antigen test or urea breath test, and where indicated, a course of eradication therapy. Early detection and management can significantly reduce the risk of long-term complications and improve digestive comfort.
