This profile investigates some of the most common underlying health factors that can contribute to hair loss and thinning. Hair loss has many possible causes, and while some are genetic, it can often be linked to factors such as a thyroid imbalance, iron or vitamin deficiency, hormonal changes, or other underlying health issues. By checking these factors together, this profile helps identify contributors that may be treatable, offering a useful starting point for understanding and addressing the problem.

Thyroid and hormones

Hormonal imbalances are among the most common and treatable causes of hair loss:

  • Thyroid function (TSH and free T4): both an underactive and overactive thyroid are well-known causes of hair thinning and loss
  • Testosterone, SHBG, and free androgen index (FAI): assess your androgen (male hormone) levels, which play a central role in common patterns of hair loss in both men and women

Iron and vitamins

Deficiencies here are a frequent and correctable cause of hair loss:

  • Ferritin: the best marker of your iron stores, and low iron is one of the most common causes of hair shedding, particularly in women
  • Vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate (B9): these vitamins are important for healthy hair growth, and a deficiency can contribute to hair loss

General health

Hair loss can also reflect wider health issues, so this profile includes broad health markers:

  • Full Blood Count: checks for anaemia and other blood conditions
  • Blood sugar (glucose and HbA1c): checks for diabetes and blood sugar problems, which can affect general health and hair
  • Liver and kidney function: assess the health of these key organs, as underlying illness can contribute to hair loss

An important note

Hair loss is complex and often has more than one cause. This profile checks for physical and hormonal factors that can contribute to it, but normal results do not necessarily rule out other causes, including genetic hair loss, stress, or scalp conditions, which are not measured by blood tests. Your results are best discussed with your GP, who can consider them alongside your history and, where needed, refer you to a specialist such as a dermatologist.

Why it matters

Hair loss can be distressing, and identifying a treatable underlying cause can make a real difference. By checking common contributors such as thyroid problems, iron and vitamin deficiencies, and hormonal factors, this profile helps you and your doctor understand what may be behind your hair loss and take informed steps to address it.
