HE4 Blood Test (Ovarian Cancer Marker)
A complementary ovarian cancer marker for clearer risk assessment.
The HE4 Blood Test measures human epididymis protein 4 (HE4), a glycoprotein biomarker that can be elevated in ovarian cancer, particularly the endometrioid and serous subtypes. It is used alongside other clinical information and, where appropriate, the CA125 marker to support the assessment of ovarian cancer risk, especially in premenopausal women where CA125 alone can be less specific. The test is performed on a simple blood sample using an immunoassay method in the laboratory.

Why it matters
HE4 can add valuable information when evaluating a pelvic mass or investigating suspected ovarian cancer. Because HE4 is less likely than CA125 to rise in benign gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids, it can help improve specificity when used as part of a combined risk assessment. Results should always be interpreted by a doctor alongside imaging, symptoms, and other test findings, and HE4 is not a standalone screening test for ovarian cancer in the general population.

No special preparation required.
