Heavy Metals Screen
Check for harmful metal exposure and mineral balance.
This screen measures the levels of a range of metals and trace elements in the body. Some of these, such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium, are toxic metals that can build up through environmental or occupational exposure and cause harm. Others, such as zinc, copper, and selenium, are essential trace elements that the body needs in small amounts, where both too little and too much can affect health. This screen helps assess exposure to harmful metals and the balance of essential ones.
Toxic metals
These metals have no useful role in the body and can be harmful if levels build up:
- Lead: exposure can come from old paint, plumbing, or certain occupations, and can affect the nervous system and other organs
- Mercury: exposure can come from some fish, dental or industrial sources, and can affect the nervous system and kidneys
- Arsenic: found in some water sources, foods, and industrial settings
- Cadmium: exposure can come from smoking and certain industrial processes, and can affect the kidneys
- Nickel: a common cause of allergy and a metal encountered in various industrial and everyday settings
- Chromium: an element that can be harmful in certain forms with high exposure, often occupational
Essential trace elements
These are needed by the body in small amounts, and this screen checks whether levels are in a healthy range:
- Zinc: important for immune function, wound healing, and many body processes
- Copper: essential for red blood cells, nerves, and connective tissue
- Selenium: an important antioxidant that supports the immune system and thyroid function
An important note on interpretation
Metal and trace element levels are interpreted alongside your symptoms, and where relevant, your occupational or environmental exposure and diet. A raised level of a toxic metal may warrant identifying and reducing the source of exposure, while an imbalance in essential elements may reflect diet or an underlying condition. Any abnormal result should be discussed with your GP or an appropriate specialist, who can interpret it in context and advise on any further action or investigation.
Why it matters
Exposure to toxic metals can cause a range of health problems, sometimes with vague or gradual symptoms, while imbalances in essential trace elements can affect immunity, energy, and general health. This screen provides a useful assessment of both, helping to identify harmful exposure or nutritional imbalances that may benefit from attention.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
