Hepatitis A Profile

The Hepatitis A Profile is a straightforward blood test that screens for exposure to the hepatitis A virus (HAV), a highly contagious infection of the liver typically transmitted through contaminated food, water, or close personal contact. It is suitable for anyone experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or jaundice, as well as for individuals who may have been exposed to the virus and need clarity on their infection status. The test uses enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect specific antibodies produced by the immune system in response to HAV.

The profile includes two key markers:

• HAV IgM: This antibody appears early in the course of infection and remains detectable for around three to six months. A positive result generally indicates a current or recent hepatitis A infection.
• HAV Ab (Total): This measures total antibodies (IgG and IgM) against HAV. A positive result can reflect either recent or past infection, and in the context of a negative IgM, it typically indicates previous exposure or successful vaccination.

Together, these markers help distinguish between an active infection and prior exposure or immunisation, guiding appropriate clinical management and public health measures.

Why it matters
Hepatitis A is usually self-limiting, but it can cause significant illness, especially in older adults or those with underlying liver disease. Identifying an active infection allows for timely supportive care, prevents further transmission, and helps protect close contacts. Knowing your immune status can also inform vaccination decisions and provide peace of mind.
