This test screens for current or past infection with hepatitis B and hepatitis C, two blood-borne viruses that can quietly damage the liver over many years. It is suitable for anyone who wants clarity on their status, including people with new or multiple sexual partners, those considering a new relationship, individuals from regions where these viruses are more common, healthcare and occupational health candidates, and anyone who has been advised to test after potential exposure. The panel uses an immunoassay technique to detect specific viral antigens and antibodies in a simple blood sample.
The test examines four key markers:
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)
- Detects the outer protein of the hepatitis B virus.
- A positive result indicates current infection and the ability to pass the virus to others.
Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs)
- Shows protective immunity, either from successful vaccination or from recovery after natural infection.
- A positive result generally means you are protected against future hepatitis B infection.
Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)
- Indicates past or ongoing exposure to the hepatitis B virus.
- Helps distinguish between infection and vaccine-derived immunity when interpreted alongside the other markers.
Hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV)
- Screens for exposure to the hepatitis C virus.
- A positive result requires confirmation with a direct viral test to determine whether the infection is active or has cleared.
Why it matters
Hepatitis B and C often cause no symptoms for years while silently affecting liver health. Early detection allows for monitoring, treatment, and steps to prevent transmission to others. Knowing your status also supports informed decisions about vaccination, sexual health, and occupational clearance requirements.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
