The Hepatitis B Profile is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates your immune status and infection stage for the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is suitable for anyone concerned about possible exposure, undergoing routine sexual health screening, or requiring clearance for occupational health, travel, or fertility purposes. The test uses enzyme immunoassay (EIA) technology to detect specific viral antigens and antibodies, providing a clear picture of whether you are currently infected, have resolved a past infection, or are protected through vaccination.
What the markers mean
- Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg): A direct viral marker. A positive result indicates current infection and that you can pass the virus to others.
- Hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb): A protective antibody. A positive result shows immunity, either from successful vaccination or recovery from a past infection.
- Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg): A marker of active viral replication. A positive result suggests high infectivity.
- Hepatitis B e antibody (HBeAb): Indicates that viral replication has slowed or stopped, often seen as the infection resolves or enters an inactive phase.
- Hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb): The first antibody to appear after infection. It remains detectable for life and distinguishes true infection from vaccination alone.
Why it matters
Hepatitis B can be silent for years while still damaging the liver. Knowing your status empowers you to protect your health, prevent transmission to partners, and make informed decisions about vaccination or clinical follow-up. Early detection and monitoring are key to managing the infection effectively.
