The Herpes Blood Test (HSV-1 & HSV-2 IgG & IgM Antibodies) is a confidential blood test that screens for past or recent infection with herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. It is suitable for anyone who has had potential exposure, is experiencing or has experienced symptoms such as cold sores or genital lesions, or simply wishes to know their status for personal or partner health reasons. Testing is carried out using a simple blood sample, with antibody detection performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
The test distinguishes between the two virus types and between two classes of antibodies:
HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1)
- HSV-1 IgG: Indicates past or established infection with HSV-1, the virus most commonly associated with oral cold sores.
- HSV-1 IgM: Suggests recent or acute infection with HSV-1.
HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2)
- HSV-2 IgG: Indicates past or established infection with HSV-2, the virus most commonly associated with genital herpes.
- HSV-2 IgM: Suggests recent or acute infection with HSV-2.
Why it matters
Herpes simplex virus infections are extremely common and frequently asymptomatic, meaning many people are unaware they carry the virus. Knowing your HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibody status allows you to make informed decisions about your sexual health, discuss results openly with partners, and seek appropriate medical advice if needed. Early identification of recent infection (IgM) or established infection (IgG) can guide clinical management and help reduce onward transmission.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
