Herpes Blood Test (HSV-2 IgG Antibody)

This test detects IgG antibodies specific to herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), the virus most commonly associated with genital herpes. It is suitable for anyone who wishes to check whether they have been exposed to HSV-2, whether they have symptoms or not, and for those who want a clearer picture of their sexual health status.
The test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure HSV-2 IgG antibodies in a simple blood sample. IgG antibodies typically become detectable several weeks after infection and remain present long term, making this test useful for identifying past or current infection.
Biomarkers included
- HSV-2 IgG antibody: Detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to HSV-2. A positive result indicates past or current infection with HSV-2. A negative result generally means no infection was detected, though it may be too early after exposure for antibodies to appear.
Why it matters
Many people with HSV-2 have no symptoms or mild symptoms that go unnoticed, so they may be unaware they carry the virus. Identifying HSV-2 infection allows you to take steps to protect partners, seek appropriate medical advice, and manage your sexual health with confidence. If you have symptoms such as genital sores or blisters, this test can help confirm whether HSV-2 is the cause. A negative result can provide reassurance, but if you have concerns about recent exposure, repeat testing after an appropriate window period may be advised by your doctor.
