Herpes Blood Test (HSV-2 IgG & IgM Antibodies)

This blood test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), the virus most commonly associated with genital herpes. It is suitable for anyone who has had potential exposure, is experiencing or has experienced symptoms suggestive of genital herpes, or simply wishes to know their status for personal or partner health reasons. The test uses a blood sample to measure both IgM and IgG antibodies, providing a broad picture of possible recent or past infection.
What the test measures
- HSV-2 IgM antibodies: These are typically the first antibodies to appear after infection. Their presence may indicate a recent or active infection, although IgM can sometimes be detected during reactivation.
- HSV-2 IgG antibodies: These antibodies develop later and usually remain detectable for life. A positive IgG result generally indicates past exposure to HSV-2, even if no symptoms have ever been noticed.
Why it matters
Many people with HSV-2 have no or very mild symptoms and are unaware they carry the virus. Knowing your status allows you to take appropriate steps to protect your health and that of your partners, and to discuss any necessary monitoring or management with your doctor. This test offers a straightforward, confidential way to gain clarity and peace of mind.
