HLA-DQA1 typing identifies the specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) variants you carry at the DQA1 gene. This gene is part of the HLA Class II group, a set of markers on the surface of certain immune cells that play a central role in how the immune system recognises and responds to foreign material. Because these markers are inherited and vary between individuals, HLA-DQA1 typing is used in areas such as disease association, compatibility testing, and transplantation.

What it is used for

• Disease association: certain HLA-DQA1 types are linked to a higher risk of specific conditions, particularly some autoimmune diseases, so typing can support their investigation
• Coeliac disease assessment: DQA1, together with DQB1, forms part of the HLA-DQ types (such as DQ2 and DQ8) associated with coeliac disease, and typing can help assess genetic susceptibility
• Transplantation and donor matching: HLA Class II matching is important in stem cell and organ transplantation
• Family and compatibility testing: as HLA types are inherited, typing can be relevant in family and donor matching

Understanding the results

The result reports the specific HLA-DQA1 types you carry. Because you inherit one copy from each parent, most people carry two versions. How the result is used depends entirely on the reason for testing, for example assessing genetic susceptibility to a condition or matching for transplantation.

An important note on interpretation

HLA-DQA1 typing is a specialist test whose meaning depends heavily on why it is being done. In the context of disease associations, a particular type indicates susceptibility, not a diagnosis. Many people carry types linked to certain conditions without ever developing them, and for a condition such as coeliac disease, the absence of the associated types is often more useful for ruling it out than their presence is for confirming it. Your referring clinician will interpret your result in the context of the specific reason for testing and advise on what it means and any next steps.
