Iron Blood Test (Serum Iron)

The Iron (Fe) Test measures the level of iron circulating in your bloodstream. Iron is a vital mineral that your body needs to produce haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. It also plays key roles in muscle function, brain development, and the production of certain hormones.

This test is typically requested when you have symptoms of anaemia, such as persistent tiredness, shortness of breath, pale skin, or dizziness. It is also used to monitor iron levels in people with known iron deficiency or overload conditions, and to help investigate causes of fatigue or unexplained illness.

What it screens for

• Iron deficiency anaemia: Low blood iron is a common cause of anaemia, where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to tissues.
• Iron overload (haemochromatosis): Excess iron can build up in organs such as the liver, heart, and pancreas, leading to damage if not detected and managed.
• Chronic disease or inflammation: Iron levels can be affected by long-term conditions, and this test helps your doctor interpret your overall iron status.
