The Iron Status Profile is a comprehensive blood panel designed to evaluate how well your body manages iron, from absorption and transport to storage. It is suitable for anyone experiencing persistent fatigue, unexplained weakness, or hair thinning, as well as those with known risk factors for iron deficiency or iron overload. This profile provides a detailed assessment that goes beyond a single marker, helping to distinguish between different types of anaemia and other iron-related disorders.

The panel measures the following key markers:

Iron and Transport
- Iron: The amount of circulating iron in your blood at the time of sampling.
- Transferrin: The protein that binds and transports iron around the body.
- Transferrin Saturation: The percentage of transferrin that is actually carrying iron, a key indicator of iron availability.

Storage and Binding Capacity
- Ferritin: A protein that stores iron, reflecting your body's iron reserves.
- Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC): A measure of how much iron your blood can potentially carry.
- Unsaturated Iron-Binding Capacity (UIBC): The portion of transferrin that is not currently bound to iron.

Why it matters
Iron is essential for producing red blood cells and for many cellular functions. An imbalance, whether deficiency or excess, can lead to significant health issues. This profile gives you and your doctor a clear, reliable picture of your iron status, supporting accurate diagnosis and effective management of conditions such as iron deficiency anaemia, anaemia of chronic disease, and haemochromatosis.

  • Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC)
  • Unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC)

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
