Laminin Blood Test (Liver Fibrosis Marker)

The Laminin Blood Test measures circulating levels of laminin, a key structural protein produced during the formation of basement membranes. When the liver undergoes repeated injury, whether from viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or other chronic conditions, hepatic stellate cells become activated and deposit extracellular matrix proteins including laminin. Rising laminin concentrations therefore serve as a valuable non-invasive marker of active fibrogenesis, helping clinicians assess whether liver scarring is progressing.

This test is particularly useful for patients with known chronic liver disease who need monitoring of fibrosis progression, individuals with risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, or excessive alcohol use, and those who wish to avoid or postpone more invasive procedures like liver biopsy. It can be used alongside other fibrosis markers and imaging to build a comprehensive picture of liver health.
