Legionella (Legionnaires' Disease) IgM Antibody Test
Pinpoint the cause of severe pneumonia fast.
Legionnaires' disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, often linked to contaminated water systems in hotels, hospitals, and workplaces. This test detects IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a Legionella infection, using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. It is suitable for individuals who have developed symptoms such as high fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, and headaches, particularly after potential exposure to aerosolised water sources. Early detection is crucial because Legionnaires' disease can progress rapidly and requires specific antibiotic treatment.
Biomarkers
- Legionella IgM antibodies: Screens for recent or acute infection with Legionella species, most commonly Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, the strain responsible for the majority of cases.
Why it matters
Legionnaires' disease can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Identifying Legionella IgM antibodies helps confirm an active infection, enabling timely and targeted antibiotic therapy. It also supports public health investigations to trace and control outbreaks, protecting both individual patients and the wider community.
