The Male Hormone Blood Test (Andropause & Low Testosterone) is designed for men who want a clear, clinically grounded picture of their hormonal health. It is particularly useful if you are experiencing symptoms such as persistent fatigue, reduced libido, low mood, loss of muscle mass, increased abdominal fat, or difficulty concentrating, all of which can point to an age-related decline in testosterone production (sometimes called andropause) or to a secondary hormonal imbalance. The panel combines direct hormone measurements with binding proteins and calculated indices, giving your doctor the information needed to distinguish between true testosterone deficiency and other causes of your symptoms.

All analyses are performed on a simple blood sample, with hormone levels measured using validated immunoassay techniques and calculated values derived from the measured results.

Androgens
- Testosterone (total)
- Free testosterone (calculated)
- Free Androgen Index (FAI)
- DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate)

Pituitary Regulators
- Luteinising hormone (LH)
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

Binding Proteins & Oestrogens
- Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)
- Albumin
- Oestradiol (E2)

Why it matters
Testosterone is far more than a sex hormone: it influences energy, mood, muscle and bone strength, red blood cell production, and cardiovascular health. Because a large proportion of circulating testosterone is bound to SHBG and albumin, a total testosterone result alone can be misleading. By measuring free testosterone, the Free Androgen Index, and the pituitary hormones that drive testicular function, this panel helps your doctor identify whether low testosterone is due to testicular failure, a signalling problem from the pituitary, or altered binding protein levels. DHEA-S provides additional insight into adrenal androgen production, while oestradiol is included because it plays an important role in male bone health, libido, and mood. Together, these markers support a precise diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your individual hormonal profile.

  • Book an appointment between 7am and 11am, when testosterone is at its highest.
  • Fasting is recommended, as eating can lower testosterone levels. Water is fine.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours before your test.
  • If you use testosterone treatment, tell our staff what you use and when you last used it.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
