This test measures the expression of CD69 on lymphocytes, a marker of early immune cell activation. It is used to assess immune function in patients with recurrent infections, autoimmune conditions, or suspected immune dysregulation, and to monitor response to immunomodulatory therapies. The analysis is performed using flow cytometry, a technique that identifies and counts specific cell populations based on surface markers.
What is measured
- CD69 lymphocytes: A subset of lymphocytes expressing CD69, an early activation marker that appears on the cell surface within hours of stimulation. Elevated levels indicate recent or ongoing immune activation, while low levels may suggest impaired immune responsiveness.
Why it matters
CD69 expression provides a direct window into the immune system's activation status. It helps clinicians distinguish between resting and activated immune states, supporting the diagnosis and management of immune-mediated disorders and guiding treatment decisions.
