The Menopausal Profile is a targeted hormone panel designed for women who are experiencing symptoms suggestive of the perimenopause or menopause, or who need objective confirmation of their menopausal status. It is also valuable for monitoring hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and for investigating menstrual irregularities, amenorrhoea, or suspected premature ovarian insufficiency. Using a simple blood sample, the panel measures four key hormones that together provide a clear picture of ovarian function and the body's hormonal balance.

The following markers are included:

  • Luteinising hormone (LH): A pituitary hormone that triggers ovulation. Levels rise significantly as ovarian function declines, making it a useful indicator of the menopausal transition.
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): Another pituitary hormone that stimulates egg development. Persistently elevated FSH levels are a hallmark of reduced ovarian reserve and are central to confirming menopause.
  • Oestradiol (E2): The primary form of oestrogen produced by the ovaries. Falling levels reflect diminishing ovarian activity and help assess symptom severity and HRT effectiveness.
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): Screens for thyroid dysfunction, which can mimic or exacerbate menopausal symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, and mood disturbances.

This profile is suitable for women over 40 with symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, irregular periods, sleep disturbance, or mood changes, as well as for younger women with suspected premature ovarian insufficiency. It can be performed at any time of day, though FSH and LH may be interpreted alongside your cycle history for greatest accuracy.

Why it matters

Distinguishing true menopause from thyroid disorders or other hormonal imbalances ensures you receive the right treatment, whether that is HRT, thyroid medication, or lifestyle support. Early identification of premature ovarian insufficiency also has important implications for fertility planning and long-term bone and cardiovascular health.

  • Luteinising hormone (LH)
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • Oestradiol (E2)
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
