Pre-IVF Medicals - Female
Optimise your fertility journey before IVF begins.
This comprehensive pre-IVF medical assessment is designed for women preparing to undergo in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or who are considering fertility treatment. It provides a detailed picture of your reproductive health, hormonal balance, and general wellbeing, helping your fertility specialist tailor a treatment plan that maximises your chances of a successful outcome. The panel combines ovarian reserve testing, a full hormonal profile, infectious disease screening, blood group and typing, haemoglobin genotype, and a complete blood count, all from a single blood sample.
Ovarian Reserve
- Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH): a key marker of your remaining egg supply and likely response to ovarian stimulation.
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): measured between day 2 and 5 of your menstrual cycle to assess ovarian function.
- Estradiol (E2): also measured between day 2 and 5 of your cycle, providing further insight into ovarian reserve and cycle timing.
Hormonal Profile
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): screens for thyroid imbalance, which can affect ovulation and early pregnancy.
- Prolactin (PRL): elevated levels can disrupt ovulation and menstrual regularity.
- Luteinizing hormone (LH): helps evaluate cycle regulation and ovulatory function.
- Progesterone (P4): assesses ovulation and luteal phase support.
Infectious Disease Screening
- HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C: routine screening to protect both mother and baby and to guide any necessary management.
- Syphilis: screened as part of standard pre-conception and IVF protocols.
- Rubella immunity (IgM/IgG) and varicella immunity: confirms whether you are protected against these infections, which can harm a developing pregnancy.
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: detects common genital infections that can affect fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
Blood Group & Type
- ABO and Rh typing: establishes your blood group and rhesus status, important for pregnancy monitoring and any potential blood product needs.
Haemoglobin Genotype (Phenotype)
- Sickle cell and thalassaemia screening: identifies carrier status or affected status for these inherited haemoglobin conditions, which can have implications for your baby.
Complete Blood Count
- White blood cells (WBCs): screens for infection or immune system concerns.
- Red blood cells (RBCs): assesses for anaemia, which can affect energy levels and pregnancy wellbeing.
- Platelets (PLTs): checks clotting health and overall blood profile.
Why it matters
Knowing your ovarian reserve, hormone balance, infection status, blood group, haemoglobin genotype, and general blood health before starting IVF allows your clinical team to personalise your stimulation protocol, address any treatable issues early, and reduce risks for both you and your future baby. It is a proactive step that supports safer, more informed fertility care from the very beginning.
