Procollagen III Blood Test (PIIINP – Liver Fibrosis Marker)

The Procollagen III Blood Test measures the amino-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP), a byproduct released when the body lays down new collagen. Because collagen turnover accelerates during hepatic fibrogenesis, PIIINP serves as a sensitive serum marker of active liver scarring. This test is particularly useful for patients with chronic liver conditions such as viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or those taking medications that can affect the liver. It is also used to monitor disease progression and treatment response in conditions like primary biliary cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis.

Why it matters
