Rubella Antibody Blood Test (Rubella IgG)

The Rubella Antibody Blood Test (Rubella IgG) is a straightforward blood test that checks whether you have protective immunity against rubella, also known as German measles. It is most commonly requested for women who are planning a pregnancy, for pregnant women who need their immune status confirmed, and for healthcare workers or other professionals who require documented evidence of immunity as part of occupational health clearance.

Rubella is usually a mild viral illness in children and adults, but infection during early pregnancy can cause serious harm to the developing baby, including congenital rubella syndrome. Establishing your immune status in advance allows you and your clinician to make informed decisions, such as vaccination before conception where immunity is absent.

The test works by measuring the level of rubella-specific IgG antibodies in your blood. IgG antibodies are the long-term memory of your immune system: their presence at a protective level generally indicates that you have either been vaccinated or previously infected, and that you are very likely to be immune. A negative or equivocal result suggests you may not be protected and may benefit from vaccination.
