Rubella Antibody Blood Test (Rubella IgM)

The Rubella Antibody Blood Test (Rubella IgM) is a targeted serological test used to detect IgM antibodies against the rubella virus. It is primarily requested for pregnant women, individuals planning pregnancy, and those with symptoms suggestive of rubella or a known exposure. It is also used in occupational health and clinical settings where confirmation of recent infection is required.

Rubella, also known as German measles, is a viral infection that is usually mild in children and adults but can cause serious complications, particularly in pregnancy. Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) can lead to severe birth defects if infection occurs in the first trimester. Detecting IgM antibodies helps identify recent or acute infection, as IgM is typically the first antibody class produced by the immune system following exposure.

This test uses an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay technique to detect rubella-specific IgM in a simple blood sample. Results should be interpreted alongside clinical history, vaccination status, and other serological markers such as rubella IgG, where appropriate.
