Rubella Immunity & Antibody Blood Test (IgG / IgM)

Rubella, also known as German measles, is a viral infection that is usually mild in children and adults but can cause serious harm to an unborn baby if a woman becomes infected during early pregnancy. This test is for anyone who needs to know their immune status or investigate a possible current or recent infection. It is commonly requested for pre-conception planning, during pregnancy, for healthcare workers and other occupational groups requiring proof of immunity, and for diagnosing suspected acute infection.

The test uses a blood sample and employs enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay techniques to detect two distinct types of antibody produced by the immune system in response to the rubella virus.

Rubella Antibodies
- Rubella IgM: Detects recent or acute infection. IgM antibodies typically appear early after exposure and usually disappear within a few weeks to months.
- Rubella IgG: Detects past infection or vaccination. IgG antibodies generally appear later and provide long-term immunity. Their presence indicates that you are protected against rubella.

Why it matters
Knowing your rubella antibody status is vital for protecting both you and others. A positive IgG result confirms immunity, which is especially important before or during pregnancy. A positive IgM result may indicate a current or recent infection that requires prompt medical attention, particularly if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Accurate diagnosis helps guide clinical decisions, prevents unnecessary worry, and supports public health measures to control the spread of rubella.
