The Scl-70 Antibody Test is a focused blood test used to detect antibodies against topoisomerase I, commonly known as Scl-70 antibodies. These antibodies are strongly associated with systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), particularly the diffuse cutaneous form, and can help clinicians evaluate patients with suggestive symptoms such as skin thickening, Raynaud's phenomenon, or pulmonary involvement. This test is typically requested when there is clinical suspicion of scleroderma or as part of a broader autoimmune workup.

What it screens for

  • Scl-70 antibody (anti-topoisomerase I): the presence of this antibody can support a diagnosis of systemic sclerosis and may correlate with a higher risk of interstitial lung disease and more extensive skin involvement.

Who it is for

This test may be appropriate for individuals with symptoms or signs suggestive of scleroderma, including skin tightening or thickening (especially of the fingers and face), Raynaud's phenomenon, digital ulcers, or unexplained pulmonary fibrosis. It can also be used to help monitor disease activity or assess prognosis in those already diagnosed with systemic sclerosis.

Why it matters

Detecting Scl-70 antibodies provides valuable information that can guide diagnosis, help predict the pattern and severity of disease, and inform monitoring for associated complications such as lung involvement. Early identification supports timely specialist referral and appropriate management.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Important Clinical Information:

This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.

Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
