Sm Antibody Blood Test | Lupus (SLE)
Pinpoint the specific antibody linked to lupus.
The Sm Antibody Blood Test detects anti-Smith antibodies, a highly specific marker for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This test is primarily used to support the diagnosis of lupus when other clinical signs and symptoms are present, and to help distinguish SLE from other connective tissue diseases. It is particularly valuable for patients with suspected or confirmed lupus, especially those with overlapping features of other autoimmune conditions.
What it screens for
- Anti-Smith (Sm) antibody: an autoantibody directed against small nuclear ribonucleoproteins. Its presence is strongly associated with SLE and is considered highly specific, meaning it is rarely found in other conditions.
Why it matters
Identifying anti-Smith antibodies provides clinicians with a powerful tool to confirm a lupus diagnosis, guide monitoring, and tailor management. Because this marker is so specific, a positive result can bring clarity when other tests are inconclusive, helping patients and doctors move forward with an accurate care plan.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
