STI PCR I

This test uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect four of the most common sexually transmitted infections from a single sample. PCR is a highly sensitive molecular technique that identifies the genetic material of each organism, allowing accurate detection even when bacterial loads are low. It is suitable for anyone who is sexually active and wants a reliable check for these infections, particularly those with symptoms such as unusual discharge, burning on urination, pelvic discomfort, or bleeding between periods, as well as those without symptoms who simply want peace of mind. It is also appropriate for individuals with a new partner, multiple partners, or a partner who has been diagnosed with an STI.

Bacterial infections
- Chlamydia trachomatis (PCR): the most commonly reported bacterial STI in the UK, often silent but able to cause pelvic inflammatory disease and fertility problems if left untreated.
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PCR): the bacterium responsible for gonorrhoea, which can infect the urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat, and is increasingly resistant to some antibiotics.
- Mycoplasma genitalium (PCR): a bacterium linked to non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis, which may persist if not correctly identified and treated.
- Trichomonas vaginalis (PCR): a protozoan parasite causing trichomoniasis, which can produce vaginal discharge and irritation and is associated with an increased risk of other STIs.

Why it matters
These four infections frequently cause no noticeable symptoms, yet if left untreated they can lead to serious complications including pelvic inflammatory disease, epididymitis, infertility, and an increased risk of HIV transmission. Early detection through accurate PCR testing allows prompt, targeted treatment, helps prevent onward transmission to partners, and protects long-term reproductive and sexual health.

No special preparation required.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
