TORCH

The TORCH panel is a specialised blood test that screens for a group of infections that can pose significant risks during pregnancy or to individuals with weakened immune systems. TORCH stands for Toxoplasmosis, Other (such as syphilis, varicella-zoster, and parvovirus B19), Rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). This test is particularly important for pregnant women, as these infections can be passed from mother to baby and may cause serious complications, including birth defects, developmental delays, or miscarriage. It is also used for immunocompromised patients and those planning a pregnancy to assess immunity or detect active or past infections.

The test works by detecting two types of antibodies: IgM, which typically indicates a recent or active infection, and IgG, which usually indicates past exposure or immunity. The presence and levels of these antibodies help your doctor determine if you have been exposed, are currently infected, or are immune to these pathogens.

Toxoplasma gondii
- Toxoplasma gondii IgM: Screens for recent or active toxoplasmosis infection.

Rubella virus
- Rubella virus IgM: Indicates recent or active rubella infection.

- CMV IgG: Indicates past exposure or immunity to CMV.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
- HSV-1 IgG: Detects past exposure to HSV-1, typically associated with oral herpes.
- HSV-2 IgG: Detects past exposure to HSV-2, typically associated with genital herpes.
