Toxoplasmosis Antibody Blood Test (Toxoplasma IgG & IgM)
Know your immunity to this common parasite.
Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which is commonly acquired through contact with cat faeces, contaminated soil, or undercooked meat. Many people carry the parasite without ever knowing, as the immune system usually keeps it in check. However, the infection can be serious for pregnant women, unborn babies, and people with weakened immune systems. This blood test uses enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect two types of antibodies: Toxoplasma IgG and Toxoplasma IgM. It is suitable for anyone who may have been exposed to the parasite, pregnant women concerned about congenital transmission, immunocompromised patients, and individuals with unexplained flu-like symptoms or swollen lymph nodes.
Toxoplasma IgG
- Detects past or current infection and indicates whether you have developed immunity.
Toxoplasma IgM
- Detects recent or active infection, helping to identify acute toxoplasmosis.
Why it matters
Knowing your toxoplasmosis antibody status provides clarity in several important situations. If you are pregnant, a positive IgM result may prompt further investigation to protect your baby. If you are immunocompromised, detecting an active infection allows for timely treatment. For others, a positive IgG result confirms past exposure and likely immunity, which can be reassuring. This test gives you and your clinician the information needed to make informed decisions about your health.

No special preparation required.
For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
