Transferrin (TRF)

Transferrin (TRF) is the main protein responsible for transporting iron through the bloodstream to the bone marrow, where it is used to produce red blood cells. Measuring transferrin levels helps clinicians assess how well the body is managing and delivering iron, making it a valuable tool in the investigation of anaemia and iron disorders.

This test is typically requested when a patient has symptoms of anaemia such as fatigue, pallor, or breathlessness, or when iron deficiency or iron overload is suspected. It is also used to monitor conditions that affect iron metabolism, including chronic inflammation, liver disease, and nutritional deficiencies.
