Urine Analysis and Culture
Pinpoint the cause of urinary symptoms, fast.
This test combines a comprehensive urine analysis with a laboratory culture to investigate urinary tract symptoms, screen for kidney and metabolic problems, and identify any bacterial infection with precision. It is suitable for anyone experiencing burning, frequency, urgency, or pelvic discomfort, as well as for the routine monitoring of kidney health, diabetes, and hypertension. A simple urine sample is all that is required, collected at the clinic by a trained professional.
The analysis is performed in two complementary stages. First, a detailed chemical and microscopic examination of the urine is carried out, often using automated analysers and microscopy. Second, a culture is set up to grow and identify any bacteria present, with sensitivity testing to guide the most effective treatment.
Urine Chemistry
- pH level: indicates how acidic or alkaline the urine is, which can influence stone formation and infection risk.
- Specific gravity (SG): reflects how concentrated the urine is, giving clues about hydration and kidney concentrating ability.
- Protein (PRO) and Microalbumin (MALB): detect protein leaking into the urine, an early sign of kidney damage.
- Glucose (GLU) and Ketones (KET): screen for diabetes and fat breakdown, useful in monitoring metabolic control.
- Blood (BLD): identifies red blood cells in the urine, which may indicate infection, stones, or kidney inflammation.
- Bilirubin (BIL) and Urobilinogen (UBG): assess liver and bile function.
- Nitrite (NIT) and Leukocyte (LEU): key markers of bacterial infection.
- Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): can interfere with other test results, so it is measured to ensure accuracy.
- Creatinine (CRE), Calcium (CA), and Albumin-Creatinine ratio (calculated): evaluate kidney filtration and the risk of kidney stones or early kidney disease.
Urine Physical Examination
- Colour and Clarity: simple visual observations that can signal dehydration, infection, blood, or other abnormalities.
Urine Sediment
- Erythrocytes, Epithelial cells, Micro-organisms, Yeast cells, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mucus, Crystals, Amorphous crystals, Cast: microscopic examination of the urine sediment helps identify cells, casts, crystals, and organisms that point to specific kidney, bladder, or vaginal conditions.
- Culture: identifies the exact bacteria causing an infection and which antibiotics will be effective.
Why it matters
Urinary symptoms are common and can stem from many causes, including infection, stones, or underlying kidney disease. This test provides a clear, actionable answer by combining rapid chemical and microscopic analysis with a definitive culture. For patients, it means targeted treatment and peace of mind. For clinicians, it supports accurate diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic prescribing, and ongoing monitoring of renal and metabolic health.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Important Clinical Information:
This test is a screening tool to monitor and support your overall health. It does not replace your GP or Consultant.
Always discuss your test results, especially any abnormal results, with your GP, who can interpret them in the context of your medical history and overall health.
