Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Pinpoint the hidden cause of mouth ulcers and migraines.
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is a water-soluble vitamin that your body cannot store, so regular dietary intake is essential to maintain healthy levels. This test measures the concentration of riboflavin in your blood to identify deficiency, which can arise from inadequate diet, malabsorption conditions such as coeliac disease or Crohn's disease, certain medications, and increased requirements during pregnancy or illness. It is suitable for anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, recurrent mouth ulcers, cracked lips, sore tongue, or migraines, as well as those with restricted diets or chronic gastrointestinal conditions.
Riboflavin is a precursor to the coenzymes flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which are central to energy production, cellular growth, and the metabolism of other B vitamins including niacin, vitamin B6, and folate. It also plays a key role in antioxidant protection and the recycling of glutathione. Because of these wide-ranging functions, low riboflavin can contribute to anaemia, neurological symptoms, and increased oxidative stress.

Why it matters
Riboflavin deficiency is easily overlooked but can have significant consequences for energy levels, neurological function, and the health of your skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Identifying a low level allows for targeted dietary advice or supplementation, which can resolve symptoms and prevent complications. It is also particularly relevant for people with malabsorption disorders, those taking certain medications, and anyone following a vegan or dairy-free diet, as these groups are at higher risk of insufficiency.
