Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin essential for over 100 enzyme reactions, most of which involve protein metabolism. It is required for the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, for haemoglobin synthesis, and for the proper functioning of the immune and nervous systems. This test measures the level of vitamin B6 in the blood to identify deficiency or excess, both of which can cause significant neurological symptoms.

This test is suitable for anyone experiencing unexplained numbness, tingling, or burning in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy), persistent fatigue, low mood, confusion, or a weakened immune response. It is also valuable for individuals with malabsorption conditions such as coeliac disease or Crohn's disease, those taking medications that deplete B6 (including isoniazid, penicillamine, and certain oral contraceptives), and anyone with a diet low in B6-rich foods such as poultry, fish, potatoes, chickpeas, and bananas. Because both low and high levels can be harmful, this test is equally important for people taking high-dose B6 supplements who want to confirm their levels are safe.

Biomarkers included

Vitamin B6 status
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

Why it matters
Vitamin B6 deficiency can cause peripheral neuropathy, anaemia, seizures, depression, and confusion, while excessive intake from supplements can also lead to irreversible nerve damage. Measuring your B6 level gives you and your clinician a clear, objective picture of your status, allowing for precise correction of a deficiency or safe reduction of an excess. Early identification and appropriate management can prevent or reverse many of the neurological and psychological symptoms associated with abnormal B6 levels, supporting better energy, mood, and long-term nervous system health.

For blood tests, we recommend drinking plenty of water beforehand to ensure smooth sample collection. If you are taking any regular medication, continue to do so unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
