Vitamin B9 (Folate)

This test measures the level of vitamin B9, also known as folate, in your blood. Folate is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a vital role in cell division, DNA synthesis, and red blood cell production. It is particularly important for women who are pregnant or planning to conceive, as adequate folate helps prevent neural tube defects in the developing baby. It is also relevant for anyone experiencing symptoms of deficiency, such as fatigue, mouth sores, or anaemia, and for those with conditions that affect nutrient absorption, such as coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease.

The test is performed on a simple blood sample, and the level of folate is measured using a validated laboratory method. Results are typically available within a few working days.

Why it matters
Folate deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia, a condition where red blood cells are larger than normal and cannot function properly, causing tiredness, weakness, and shortness of breath. Low folate during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Additionally, folate works closely with vitamin B12 in many bodily processes, and an imbalance between the two can cause neurological symptoms. Identifying a deficiency early allows for appropriate dietary advice or supplementation, helping to restore normal levels and prevent complications.
